SURFACE PREPARATION
All wall and floor substrates must be clean, dry, firm and stable, free of dust, dirt, oil and grease. Substrates should be strong enough to support the weight of the adhesive and tiles being fixed (see below for loadings). For plasterboard and plaster finishes that have been painted and are showing a weak or flaky surface finish then mechanical sanders or hand sanding blocks are generally used to remove the film. However for the likes of floor screed surface contamination, adhesive residues and weak surface laitance or even smooth dense floors such as power floated concrete, these will require a more heavy duty scarifying using specialist flooring equipment to remove the surface of the substrate to ensure the substrate is sound, stable and has a rough open texture. To encourage best adhesion to the substrate it is advisable that prior to applying adhesive that substrates are primed. Remember – sanding or mechanical abrasion of any surface will leave powder deposits which require thorough removal by suitable vacuum equipment to
provide a clean dust free surface. Failing to remove fine powder deposits and weak surfaces is a common reason for de-bonding of tile adhesive and primer from the substrate. Using a wet sponge to clean down a wall or floor of dust deposits only serves to spread it around, it is therefore advisable to vacuum thoroughly prior to use of wet sponge.

APPLICATION
Apply the adhesive to the required thickness (limits 3mm – 20mm) in areas up to 1m² at a time. For internal walls use a notched trowel to the following notch dimensions to provide solid rib lines:
Mosaic tiles: 3mm x 3mm at 6mm centres
General wall tiles: 5mm x 5mm at 10mm centres
General floor tiles: 8mm x 8mm at 16 mm centres
For floors and external applications we advise to use the solid bed method. This involves applying a uniform bed of adhesive to the floor and “buttering” the back of the tile with the same adhesive. When the tiles are bedded with a twisting action, pressing firmly down it ensures 100% contact is made with both the floor and the tile. When fitting tiles leave spaces between each of the tiles to allow for grouting (approx: walls 1mm – 3mm and floors 2mm – 12mm). Before the tile adhesive sets clean off the excess adhesive from the face of the tile and grout joints with a clean damp cloth or sponge.

UltraTile ProPave Grout: External Tile Grout is extremely easy to use, cover large areas with ease using this product by simply brushing it into grout joints.

APPLICATION – WET METHOD
When the tiles are fixed using permeable bedding materials, such as UltraScape perma-bed, ProPave can be applied using the “Wet Application” method. This is by far the most popular method of application which is generally used for patios and walkways. This method uses copious amounts of water during application hence “Wet Application”. Hosing down the fixed tiles with water initially and during application of ProPave:
• saturates the tiles and prevents oils from ProPave penetrating the tiles
• ensures ease of application
• assists with deep penetration of the product into the joint
• aids removal of excess material
Thoroughly pre-soak the area with water before application. Pour the jointing sand evenly across the tiles. Using a stiff broom, brush sand into joints ensuring they are filled to capacity. Ensure the paving surface and sand are kept wet throughout the operation with continued use of gentle water flow from a hosepipe. This water aids deep penetration and compaction of the jointing sand as it drains. Repeat process until all jointing is filled to full depth. Soak the area with water & top up any joints that require further material and wash off excess sand from the surface. This water has to be drained free from the jointing before ProPave will cure and harden, it will only cure hard when all traces of moisture have gone from the full depth of the joint. It is therefore important that for ”Wet Application”, the base of the new installation is permeable to allow water to free drain through into the ground below. Once the jointing has cured and hardened it is unaffected by further rainwater.

SURFACE PREPARATION
Ensure the application area is thoroughly dry and in a sound and stable
condition. The surface must be free from contaminants that may hinder
adhesion such as dust, oils and grease. All laitance and surface treatments
must be removed. Surfaces must be roughened by mechanical scabbing
to enhance the key. All surfaces should be free from dust and thoroughly
clean before the primer is applied. Underfloor heating must be switched off
for at least 48 hours before and after application. When applying UltraTile
ProPrimer onto a calcium sulphate screed the following preparation should
also be considered in addition to the above. It is particularly important that
calcium sulphate screeds are ensured dry and below 75%RH. These screeds
are also prone to surface laitance and therefore should be mechanically
abraded to remove this weak surface.
APPLICATION
The product should be applied using a brush or roller and scrubbed well into the surface to avoid pooling. Allow to fully dry. For multi-coats, ensure each tile primer coat dries before you apply the next.

MIXING & APPLICATION
Mixing ratios of powder and water should be controlled to ensure a free flowing material suitable for 3-60mm application. Do not use excess water as this will affect the product performance and finish. For trowel/hand application mix in a clean bucket using clean cold water, as warm water will greatly reduce the product’s working time and may result in shrinkage. Pour 3.4 litres of water into an oversized bucket (20+ litres), and then gradually add the powder whilst mixing continually with an electric drill with power whisk. When all powder is added mix for a further 2 minutes, keeping the whisk below the surface (to minimise air entrapment) until a lump free creamy material is attained. Once mixed, the product can be applied by pouring onto the floor and
spreading with a smooth edge steel trowel. Plan to begin at the furthest point working back towards the point of entry to avoid walking through wet product. Maintain a wet edge to ensure adjacent mixes blend in correctly. For large areas or deep sections it may be beneficial to batten off areas into sections. Keep free from floor traffic and other trades whilst curing.

MIXING & APPLICATION
Mixing ratios of powder and water should be controlled to ensure a free flowing material suitable for 3-75mm application. Do not use excess water as this will affect the product performance and finish. For trowel/hand application mix in a clean bucket using clean cold water, as warm water will greatly reduce the product’s working time and may result in shrinkage. Pour 3.4 litres of water into an oversized bucket (20+ litres), and then gradually add the powder whilst mixing continually with an electric drill with power
whisk. When all powder is added mix for a further 2 minutes, keeping the whisk below the surface (to minimise air entrapment) until a lump free creamy material is attained. Once mixed, the product can be applied by pouring onto the floor and spreading with a smooth edge steel trowel.

SURFACE PREPARATION
All wall and floor substrates must be clean, dry, firm and stable, free of dust,
dirt, oil and grease. Substrates should be strong enough to support the
weight of the adhesive and tiles being fixed (see datasheet for loadings).
For plasterboard and plaster finishes that have been painted and are
showing a weak or flaky surface finish then mechanical sanders or hand
sanding blocks are generally used to remove the film. However for the likes
of floor screed surface contamination, adhesive residues and weak surface
laitance or even smooth dense floors such as power floated concrete, these
will require a more heavy duty scarifying using specialist flooring equipment
to remove the surface of the substrate to ensure the substrate is sound,
stable and has a rough open texture. To encourage best adhesion to the
substrate it is advisable that prior to applying adhesive that substrates are
primed (please see priming section below).
Remember – sanding or mechanical abrasion of any surface will leave powder
deposits which require thorough removal by suitable vacuum equipment to
provide a clean dust free surface. Failing to remove fine powder deposits
and weak surfaces is a common reason for de-bonding of tile adhesive and
primer from the substrate. Using a wet sponge to clean down a wall or floor
of dust deposits only serves to spread it around, it is therefore advisable to
vacuum thoroughly prior to use of wet sponge.

APPLICATION
Apply the Semi-rapid adhesive to the required thickness (limits 3mm – 20mm) in areas
up to 1m² at a time. For internal walls use a notched trowel to the following
notch dimensions to provide solid rib lines:
Mosaic tiles: 3mm x 3mm at 6mm centres
General wall tiles: 5mm x 5mm at 10mm centres
General floor tiles: 8mm x 8mm at 16mm centres
For floors and external applications we advise to use the solid bed method.
This involves applying a uniform bed of adhesive to the floor and “buttering”
the back of the tile with the same adhesive. When the tiles are bedded with
a twisting action, pressing firmly down it ensures 100% contact is made with
both the floor and the tile.
When fitting tiles leave spaces between each of the tiles to allow for grouting
(approx: walls 1mm – 3mm and floors 2mm – 12mm).
Before the tile adhesive sets clean off the excess adhesive from the face of
the tile and grout joints with a clean damp cloth or sponge.

Tiles being laid on wood are at extreme risk of movement, wood through the elements of the weather will expand and contract dependant on the heat. Therefore the movement of wood with adhesive laid on it will cause the adhesive to crack over time, causing your tiles to break the bond with the adhesive and falling off!

Ceramic, porcelain and quarry tiles should be lightly abraded to form a mechanical key degreased and ensured thoroughly clean. For existing vinyl floor tiles only hard and “crunchy” vinyl tiles should be considered to be over-tiled. Be aware that some old tiles of this type contained asbestos so should not be abraded. Do not over-tile onto softer vinyl, quartz or composite tiles.

laitance or even smooth dense floors such as power floated concrete, these
will require a more heavy duty scarifying using specialist flooring equipment
to remove the surface of the substrate to ensure the substrate is sound,
stable and has a rough open texture.

APPLICATION
Apply the ProFlex adhesive to the required thickness (limits 3mm – 20mm) in areas
up to 1m² at a time. For internal walls use a notched trowel to the following
notch dimensions to provide solid rib lines:
Mosaic tiles: 3mm x 3mm at 6mm centres
General wall tiles: 5mm x 5mm at 10mm centres
General floor tiles: 8mm x 8mm at 16 mm centres
For floors and external applications we advise to use the solid bed method.
Before the tile adhesive sets clean off the excess adhesive from the face of
the tile and grout joints with a clean damp cloth or sponge

Tiles being laid on wood are at extreme risk of movement, wood through the elements of the weather will expand and contract dependant on the heat. Therefore the movement of wood with adhesive laid on it will cause the adhesive to crack over time, causing your tiles to break the bond with the adhesive and falling off! The only wood that could be laid on to, is a suitable thickness plywood overlay that has been fixed securely and primed.

UltraTile ProFlex SPES: Standard Set Flexible Tile Adhesive is not recommended for wood.
